The home of diamonds
Since medieval times, Hatton Garden has been famous for its diamond relations and quick became the centre for jewellers, diamonds and jewellery. In 1581, the area was given to Sir Christopher Hatton by Elizabeth I and was established as a jewellery quarter with jewellers flooding to the area to ply their trade.
In 1962, the first retail jewellery shop opened and now Hatton Garden is home to over 300 businesses in the jewellery industry and with over 50 shops, they represent the largest cluster of jewellery retailers in the UK. The largest of these companies in the infamous De Beers dynasty, which dominates the international diamond trade.
Interestingly, Hatton Garden was also the home to the invention of the machine gun. In 1881, Sir Hiram Maxim had a factory at 57 Hatton Garden and invented and started to produce the Maxim Gun, capable of firing 666 rounds a minute.
